Ann Harris – Demonstrator Oct. 15th

2011 October 4
by mark4photos

California regionalism was well established when Ann studied painting at Pomona College, where she earned a B.A. Degree, (she also earned her M.A. from California State University at San Jose). Her early work reflects the influence of her teachers who were pioneers of that watercolor movement. Eventually Ann developed her own fluid style by painting landscapes and seascapes in watercolor, reflecting her delight with nature’s patterns, colors, and textures. Sometimes she paints realistically and other times partially or totally abstracted.

For several years she painted wildflowers in Santa Cruz County and the Carson Pass area of California’s High Sierra. She does no sketching, but begins directly by drawing with paint, often finishing her work in the studio. The artist stops when her painting “sings in harmony”. Her paintings are interpretations of the flowers, and not as botanical drawings or illustrations.

Winner of many awards, Ann’s art is included in numerous private collections while her award-winning paintings have been exhibited widely in California, including the Crocker Museum, Yosemite National Park, Santa Cruz, and in Silver Lake.

On Oct. 15th, Ann will demonstrate the freedom she’s found in painting watercolor using NO subject matter. She will also talk about her collection of delicately rendered flower illustrations that she has assembled and printed in books. Many of these are accompanied by poetry that she has written.

Let’s welcome Ann Harris and learn about her long and accomplished career in watercolor. Please plan to join the YWA every third Saturday of the month (September–May) for an informative demonstration, good food, and to meet local artists.

The Yosemite Western Artists event starts at 11:30, but you’ll want to come early to get a good seat at the Gertrude School House, located on Rd. 600 in Ahwahnee (Rd. 600 intersects Highway 49, about 5 miles westerly of Oakhurst on Highway 49). The public is welcome to join YWA members for a potluck luncheon and to enjoy our demonstrator.

There is a $5.00 recommended donation for members and $7.00 for non-members. Thanks to Juanita Smith for suggesting Ann Harris as our demonstrator for October 15th.

Hoo Haw! We had a great time last Saturday at Gallery Row’s Reception for the Sierra Art Trails Preview Exhibit. Lori Ann Cole did her best to portray the artists in her stylistic interpretation of art and artist, and we have the results HERE!

If you have some other shots of the festivities, please send ‘em in to me. I only shot a video of the awards and I haven’t processed it because I was too busy making the page that you should click on right now, if you are still reading this article. HERE!

Had a good time!

Congratulations to Joyce Wycoff for all her efforts in conceptualizing the “Mob” approach to fun in the mountains. It was an offer we could’t refuse. There were people smiling and visiting and hanging out together in Gallery Row. There was good food and I got a chance to introduce a few folks to my daughter, visiting from Greece. Jon threw paint. Flags were made. Stuff was appreciated. Here is a compendium of shots from Lori Ann Cole. There is talk of doing it again. UPDATE!! Kudos also to Vivian Helena and Julie Mitchell who also had a lot to do with “rustling up” the likely suspects for this event. I only knew Joyce was talking it up, it turns out, it was a true conspiracy.

Flashy Idea for August 13th

2011 August 3
by mark4photos

Joyce Wycoff has an idea. What happens when a bunch of artists, art lovers, musicians, photographers, dancers and people in funny hats show up in one place at one time? Who knows? It’s a “flash mob” and almost anything can happen.

Gallery Row, Oakhurst August 13th, 6-8pm. More info, email Joyce HERE:

Wikipedia sez: A flash mob (or flashmob)[1] is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and sometimes seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment and/or satire.[2][3] Flash mobs are organized via telecommunicationssocial media, or viral emails.

One thing for sure, whatever happens will never happen again in quite the same way … and it’s bound to be fun. We’ve heard a rumor that Jon Bock will be throwing a bunch of paint.

So, join us for the p-art-y … bring your creativity, your sense of adventure, something beautiful to show and tell and a tube of acrylic paint (any color). We’ll use a little of the paint and donate the rest to local school art programs.

Sandwiches, salads, cookies and drinks will be available from the Produce Place.

To see a very joyful and appreciated Flash mob appearance, look at this one which took place in Antwerp.

More than 200 dancers were performing their version of “Do Re Mi”, in the Central Station of Antwerp. with just 2 rehearsals they created this amazing stunt! Those 4 fantastic minutes started the 23 of march 2009, 08:00 AM. It is a promotion stunt for a Belgian television program, where they are looking for someone to play the leading role, in the musical of “The Sound of Music.” (The recording is from the movie, with a little musical enhancement.)
