The Mariposa County Arts Council, along with our many fine sponsors, continue the 2010 season of Cousin Jack’s Mariposa Evenings presenting SNAKEROCK on Friday, August 20th, and ELECTRIC BLUE featuring The HAGAR BROS. on Saturday, August 21st. SnakeRock – led by Bill DeWitt, son of the late music impresario Bob DeWitt – will be performing classic rock covers as well as original songs by DeWitt and new band member Glen Franklin; songs they’ve been recording for a future release. Electric Blue featuring the Hagar Bros. will be playing the high-energy electric Blues that they’ve become famous for, with Tim Hagar’s guitar pyrotechnics and brother Rob’s powerful blues harp (harmonica) blowing, figuring in prominently; mixing Muddy Waters to Jimi Hendrix with the elder Hagar’s original blues/rock tunes.
All performances for Mariposa Evenings will be held at the Mariposa County Arts Park, located on Hwy. 140, between 4th and 5th Streets, in downtown Mariposa. Lee Underwood read poetry from his recently published book Timewinds at the Stellar Gallery last Saturday, August 7th. With a zest for life and spirited enthusiasm his syncopated rhythms of expression and gave a very entertaining rendition to his “artwork” of life.
There is a video segment of one moment of Time.
Here is an example of his Owlish Wisdom.
I hot-tubbed in California,
Zazenned in Kyoto,
Climbed pyramids in
Cairo, Mexico, Yucatan,
But I still don’t fit,
Don’t know where the It is,
And constantly get lost in
This ridiculously tangled forest.
Think I’ll just relax,
Won’t even try to mold
Illusory self to other
Ways, shapes or means,
Simply Owl-yowl it up,
Big-eyed-watchful or
Feather-puffed dozing
Gently winking
When the rains come.
The Timberline Gallery in Oakhurst in partnership with the Mariposa County Arts Council, presents the “Jane Gyer Retrospective” exhibition. The Mariposa County Arts Council, along with our many fine sponsors, continue the 2010 season of Cousin Jack’s Mariposa Evenings on Friday, August 13th with KILLIN’ TIME; and presents THE ADAM BURNS BAND on Saturday, August 14th.
Killin’ Time perform country western music in the honky-tonk style of the genre, relying on the pedal steel guitar and twangy vocals to deliver their classic country covers of artists like Merle Haggard, George Jones, Hank Williams, George Strait, and others.
Combining rock, ska and eastern European influences, The Adam Burns Band creates music that is both energetic and richly melodic. Their exciting shows and recordings featuring Adam’s original songs (and some from violinist Kristin Ramsey) have earned the band a devoted following. To find out more go to www.adamburnsband.com.

The Mariposa County Arts Council features Cousin Jack’s Mariposa Evenings with FLORA & The PEACH PICKERS on Friday, August 6th and The TRESPASSERS on Saturday, August 7th.
Flora Elder-Rosen fronts her very capable band, also referred to as “Low Country”, with a mighty country-western voice, singing and playing real country music in the plaintive, lonesome style of Hank Williams; derived from the deep roots of this true American art form, not the “pop” country music on the radio playlists today.
The Trespassers have been entertaining audiences at festivals and venues large & small, from the high sierras to the coast, with their original gypsy/bluegrass songs for some time now, and have been a staple of Mariposa Evenings since they formed. A sample of their newest recording, “Western Front,” can be heard – along with more information about the band – at www.thetrespassers.com ; CDs will be available at the show.

Painting at the Gertrude Schoolhouse, a weekly group on Fridays is going to be featured on the Yosemite Western Artists website with THEIR OWN GALLERY of examples of their work. Larry Potter will assist in collecting samples from the folks who attend and he will be coordinating with Mark Heliger, Dave Hoffman and others in the YWA to give these folks some recognition for their artistic endeavors.
We are “penciling in” a date of August 15th to have the artists contribute their initial submissions. As more work is collected, we’ll be able to add that to the gallery. Here is a sample from an April sitting.
For more information, you can email Larry Potter or David Hoffman or even that bothersome Mark Heliger. (Leave Rita out of this, she said it was “OK.”)
The historic Gertrude Schoolhouse is on Road 600 about 1/2 mile off of Hwy 49 in Ahwahnee. The painting session is open to everyone and starts at 9:30 AM and goes till 12:30. Come a little early for a better painting spot.
The Mariposa County Arts Council, along with our many fine sponsors, continues the 2010 season of Cousin Jack’s Mariposa Evenings with MARIPOSA RHED & THE WILDCATS – the “mother-lode of classic rock” cover band – on Friday, July 30th. On Saturday, July 31st we present SMILEY MOUNTAIN – experts at playing and singing traditional and contemporary bluegrass/gypsy music – a perennial favorite at Mariposa Evenings.

I hope that you had a festive and reflective 4th of July. Here is a link that I just received today that can help us all appreciate the freedoms we have. It is never too late for gratitude. The video is based on YouTube. (If it doesn’t play when you click it, you may get a notice and if you click it again, it will take you directly to the YouTube site and then play.)
