These works are available for purchase, as will be a selection of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century paintings by such artists as Charles Dormon Robinson, Jules Tavernier and L.P. Latimer.

Among the available paintings will be several Yosemite views by living artists, including Michael Coleman, John Cosby, Gil Dellinger, Paul Kratter, and Joseph Paquet. The exhibition will also feature notfor- sale paintings borrowed from various owners, including a rare Thomas Ayres drawing from the 1850s and a Bierstadt field study of Yosemite Falls. The exhibition will demonstrate how talented landscape painters of all periods and styles have found inspiration at Yosemite.

The American tradition of the rhyme around the campfire after a hard day’s ride, this brand of Western prose remains alive. It’s sure to be well worth the trip to the small Western town of Coulterville to take in the works of four poets who live the ranch lifestyle and fight fiercely for their place in Americana.

In fact, it could be said this specialized and well-established form of verse is true Americana – like no other form of entertainment. Sponsored by the Mariposa County Arts Council, there is no charge to absorb the poetry from a special group of poets who are all local to the Mariposa County area.
While Elko, Nevada may be the epicenter of this truly Western and earthy brand of speak, our own tiny Western town of Coulterville, an easy jaunt from Mariposa, Sonora, and the San Joaquin Valley, will host poets in an event that runs from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18, in the Coulterville Park.

Get back to the area’s roots and the code of the West. If you’ve never experienced this brand of stage work, you owe yourself a taste. So pack up the kids, an ice chest and hit the ole dusty trail to Coulterville. The Coulterville Park is located at the intersection of Hwy 49 North and Hwy 132, the John Muir Highway.

We look forward to seeing you in Coulterville. Please bring a lawn chair or blanket for park seating. For more information call the Mariposa County Arts Council at (209) 966-3155, P.O. Box 2134 Mariposa CA 95338, Fax (209) 966-3962, email: info@arts-mariposa.org, or visit us on the web at: arts-mariposa.org. The Arts Council is funded in part by Mariposa County, the California Arts Council a State agency and the National Endowment for the Arts, a Federal Agency.
For autistic children, the new iPad is an effective, portable device for teaching communication and social skills. It’s also way cool.

I came across this 2 weeks ago and it was a “piece of good news” instead of all the stuff that we usually have to hear each day. Technology can make a difference to some children who really need all the help they can get to understand the world around them.

“Since the iPad’s unveiling in April, autism experts and parents have brought it into countless homes and classrooms around the world. Developers have begun pumping out applications specifically designed for users with special needs, and initial studies are already measuring the effectiveness of the iPod Touch and the iPad as learning tools for children with autism. Through the devices, some of these children have been able to communicate their thoughts to adults for the first time. Others have learned life skills that had eluded them for years.

Though there are other computers designed for children with autism, a growing number of experts say that the iPad is better. It’s cheaper, faster, more versatile, more user-friendly, more portable, more engaging, and infinitely cooler for young people. “I just couldn’t imagine not introducing this to a parent of a child who has autism,” says Tammy Mastropietro, a speech pathologist based outside Boston who uses the technology with numerous clients. She sees it as a game changer for those with autism, particularly those most severely affected.”

HERE IS THE COMPLETE STORY:

The Mariposa County Arts Council presents the last two shows of the 2010 season of Cousin Jack’s Mariposa Evenings: The STRING SLINGERZ on Friday, August 27th, and on Saturday, August 28th, GOOD MEDICINE will perform.

The String Slingerz in action

The String Slingerz play “old-timey” music on traditional instruments – guitar, upright bass, fiddle, & banjo – and sing in harmonies with old radio show flair; true Americana from a time before television and the internet, when families would gather around the radio to listen to the news of the day, farm reports, presidential addresses, the humor and wisdom of Will Rogers, and live performances of every musical genre from opera to the backwoods, rural style this group plays.

A fitting way to end the season is with the late Cousin Jack’s favorite group, Good Medicine, a group that has entertained Mariposa Evenings audiences for 18 of the 19 years the concerts have been presented. Their individual resumés, along with decades of constant touring and recording have polished the core duo (Frank & Debbie Sipes) of this eclectic, “folk-a-delic” group into a favorite throughout the state and beyond. This night’s performance will include some special guests, making it a kind of rare, full-band presentation. Google either of these fine bands for more description – and join us for the shows!

All performances for Mariposa Evenings will be held at the Mariposa County Arts Park, located on Hwy. 140, between 4th and 5th Streets, in downtown Mariposa. I have discovered new ways of making creative color both understandable and pleasurable. Additionally, there have been requests for specific instruction on putting the human figure in paintings. For those who wish to add that skill to their repertoire, we will cover the principles involved and provide stimulating exercises and opportunities for including figures in your regular weekly assignments. Even beginners are able to grasp the ideas presented and create convincing paintings right from the start.

Classes will last ten weeks, beginning in Oakhurst on Thursday, September 9, and in Fresno on Monday, September 13. All levels of experience are welcome to join. Tuition is $30.00 per class, payable monthly. $270.00 (10% discount) when paid in full at registration.
