Exhibition Opening Reception Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, 5:30 to 7:30 PM

Yosemite Renaissance has chosen the artists for their upcoming twenty-seventh anniversary show. The program’s opening reception is announced and here is a list of participating artists.

The programs of Yosemite Renaissance are intended to encourage diverse artistic interpretations of Yosemite. Its goals are to bring together the works of serious contemporary artists that do not simply duplicate traditional representations; to establish a continuum with past generations of Yosemite artists; and to help re-establish visual art as a major interpretive medium of the landscape and a stimulus to the protection of the environment. Historically, the arts have played a very important role in the establishment of our State and National Parks. It is our hope that they can be just as important in future efforts to preserve and protect that heritage.

I was there yesterday as they were preparing the space for the Grand Opening Reception happening tomorrow that promises to be an exciting time for all. The Gertrude School was the site of the 3rd Annual Yosemite Western Artists’ Portrait Show on a chilly Fall day in Oakhurst. The weather did not slow the attendees. There was a consistent stream of visitors during the whole event.

This is the culmination of a year’s worth of painting from live models that show up every Friday to sit for the members of the Painting Group. For more information, see yosemitewesternartists.org

Icon Painting Class

The next Icon Painting Class will be coming up in November. Joyce Tanner, our instructor, has agreed to come up to Oakhurst the second week in November. The project this time will be to paint the Holy Family on their flight into Egypt with the baby Jesus, rendered in the Coptic style. When finished, this project will make a wonderful Christmas present.

St. Raphael’s Episcopal Church will sponsor the class. The class will limited to fifteen painters and will be conducted in a quiet, reflective mood with time for prayers, as was the custom when Icons were painted in monasteries.

The particulars are:
What: Icon Painting Class
Where: Cunningham Schoolhouse in Fresno Flats
When: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, November 7^th, 8^thand 9^th
Time: 9:00 am until 3:00 pm
Cost: $50 for the three days.
Bring: Small paint brushes and one large wide brush, a sack lunch and cash or a check made out to St. Raphael’s Episcopal Church. The instructor will supply all the paints, boards and other materials.

Celebrating it’s 19th Anniversary, Stavast Studio Gallery is having an Open Gallery Exhibit – Saturday Nov. 5th from 10am to 7pm. On display will be the recent oil paintings of Stavast’s Rock & Water series as well as is new series that he is releasing. Using humor and surrealism, his newer works take nature to another level.
