The Mariposa County Arts Council features Cousin Jack’s Mariposa Evenings with FLORA & The PEACH PICKERS on Friday, August 6th and The TRESPASSERS on Saturday, August 7th.
Flora Elder-Rosen fronts her very capable band, also referred to as “Low Country”, with a mighty country-western voice, singing and playing real country music in the plaintive, lonesome style of Hank Williams; derived from the deep roots of this true American art form, not the “pop” country music on the radio playlists today.
The Trespassers have been entertaining audiences at festivals and venues large & small, from the high sierras to the coast, with their original gypsy/bluegrass songs for some time now, and have been a staple of Mariposa Evenings since they formed. A sample of their newest recording, “Western Front,” can be heard – along with more information about the band – at www.thetrespassers.com ; CDs will be available at the show.
All performances for Mariposa Evenings will be held at the Mariposa County Arts Park, located on Hwy. 140, between 4th and 5th Streets, in downtown Mariposa. There is ample, free parking on 5th Street, just a pleasant stroll along the Creek Walkway to the park, which will also provide handicap access. Tips are encouraged and appreciated. Each performance will begin at 7:00 pm. Mariposa Evenings is made available through generous donations by local businesses, which are featured in our Mariposa Evenings program. Please bring a lawn chair or blanket for park seating. For more information call the Mariposa County Arts Council at (209) 966-3155, P.O. Box 2134 Mariposa CA 95338, Fax (209) 966-3962, email: info@arts-mariposa.org, or visit us on the web at: arts-mariposa.org. Painting at the Gertrude Schoolhouse, a weekly group on Fridays is going to be featured on the Yosemite Western Artists website with THEIR OWN GALLERY of examples of their work. Larry Potter will assist in collecting samples from the folks who attend and he will be coordinating with Mark Heliger, Dave Hoffman and others in the YWA to give these folks some recognition for their artistic endeavors.
We are “penciling in” a date of August 15th to have the artists contribute their initial submissions. As more work is collected, we’ll be able to add that to the gallery. Here is a sample from an April sitting.
For more information, you can email Larry Potter or David Hoffman or even that bothersome Mark Heliger. (Leave Rita out of this, she said it was “OK.”)
The historic Gertrude Schoolhouse is on Road 600 about 1/2 mile off of Hwy 49 in Ahwahnee. The painting session is open to everyone and starts at 9:30 AM and goes till 12:30. Come a little early for a better painting spot.
The Mariposa County Arts Council, along with our many fine sponsors, continues the 2010 season of Cousin Jack’s Mariposa Evenings with MARIPOSA RHED & THE WILDCATS – the “mother-lode of classic rock” cover band – on Friday, July 30th. On Saturday, July 31st we present SMILEY MOUNTAIN – experts at playing and singing traditional and contemporary bluegrass/gypsy music – a perennial favorite at Mariposa Evenings.

I hope that you had a festive and reflective 4th of July. Here is a link that I just received today that can help us all appreciate the freedoms we have. It is never too late for gratitude. The video is based on YouTube. (If it doesn’t play when you click it, you may get a notice and if you click it again, it will take you directly to the YouTube site and then play.)
The Mariposa County Arts Council, along with our many fine sponsors, begin the 2010 season of Cousin Jack’s Mariposa Evenings on Friday, July 9th with the MAJESTIC FOOLS, an alternative Folk-Rock group performing original songs in their own free-wheeling style; and on Saturday, July 10th we present GREEN MACHINE, central California’s premier Reggae/Jam band that’s truly a feast for the eyes, ears and soul.

Charlotte Hoffman - “The California landscape inspires me. From the San Joaquin Valley to the Sierra Nevada, their subjects and colors beckon to be painted. Working from life and my photographs I capture the moments that move me.”
Phyllis McAdams - “My style is Contemporary Realism. My subjects range from the common object to the human figure. I want to convince the viewer that there is beauty and interest, not only in the obvious but also in the unexpected and not-so-obvious. My aim is to give ordinary subjects a fresh and contemporary look.”
So, we had the Affordable Art Sale on a nice spring Saturday at the historic Gertrude School. The whole schoolroom was filled, and represented by some of our talented painters. It seems that all the photographers were out somewhere shooting instead of “holding down the fort” with the painter contingent.
The Gertrude is always interesting to see. It changes every time I go there. The light on the building, the different events, the weather, the grass around the lot, the woodpecker holes. Good Times!
I was talking with Doug Boomer about an offer that Randy Graham of Oakhurst Frameworks made that he could host a YWA Art Sale a few times a year on the parking lot of the Oakhurst Shopping Center on Rd. 426. It might be good to talk it up and see if it is something that the members would be interested in doing. Randy’s reasoning is that the Center is a lot more accessible to tourists than the Gertrude School. They could find just the memento that would keep their trip to the Yosemite region as a lasting treasure of their experience.
Our art makes us happy when we do it and happier when we can share it or have someone acknowledge its value through a sale.
